My Weekend With...Swine Flu?

Well, it's been a very eventful weekend and I feel slightly 'en vogue' at having possibly contracted Swine-Flu, or Pandemic Flu, as the experts and government want us to call it - The PC brigade sticking up for the pigs!

After a Friday at school getting worse and worse I found myself in a right state come evening, shaking like a leaf on a tumble drier, with a temperature of 39oC and a head which felt like a 10 ton truck had just made a severe impact and then reversed back over me.

There was only one thing for the family to do - move out and leave me to get on with it! No chance of self-pity, whining and being pathetic, no breakfast in bed or, "are you sure I can't get you anything?" Just me and Wesley the cat cut off from all Western civilisation with the only thing to look forward to, the microwave processed cottage pie waiting in the fridge.

Saturday saw a marked improvement and me feeling somewhat of a fraud, temperature had all but disappeared and just a dull headache remained - 'It's over I've defeated the dreaded lurgy in just one day.'

Oh how wrong I was! As the Tamiflu began slicing up my digestive system sometime during the early hours of Sunday morning, I suddenly awoke and made a quick dash to the bathroom, unsure which end to start with first!

Monday arrived and, besides feeling completely drained, the worst seemed to be over. The dull headache was slowly beginning to subside and even Wesley was happy to sit in the same room as me.

By Tuesday my ordeal was coming to an end. Family returned with woeful tales of their own - The nappies I'd missed, the early hour wake-ups - I think I got the better end of the stick!

Wednesday was my final recuperation day, feeling much better and enjoying having the family back.

I sit here now, Thursday night, and have completed my first day back at school. A surprisingly enjoyable day, that rare warm feeling after a couple of decent lessons.

Certainly a weekend I'll never forget, and yet I feel a slight anti-climax. My only diagnosis came by way of a government run website 'deciding' that I needed Tamiflu - no medical professional require apparently. No ambulance sirens, no rush to A & E, just little old me stuck in the house for 5 days.

So did I have have swine flu or not? Who knows! I will certainly be taking any statistics regarding the number of people who have contracted swine flu with a pinch of salt.

The one thing that I did enjoy out of the whole affair, and what perhaps made the whole thing thoroughly worth while, was the growing of the customary 'sick man's beard' - 6 days of uncontrolled growth, can't beat it!!!
